Aries
With innovative Uranus and hopeful Jupiter in your sign June - August, you’ll want freedom and adventure. Plan extended outdoor workouts – you’ll hate being confined. Focus on toning and shaping hips, bums and thighs with lots of lunges and squats. Your love life is chaotic as unexpected changes become necessary. You’ll never lose your enthusiasm though which makes you as charming as ever.

You're primed for change in 2010 as innovative Uranus enters your sign for the first time since April 1927. This unique transit presents a once in a life time opportunity for you to make deeply authentic, if surprising or unconventional, life choices. The period from May 29 - August 14, when Uranus breaks new ground in your sign, represents the beginning of a new phase. Uranus energises Aries over the next seven years offering every Aries the chance to break away from limitations and restriction and choose a personally inspiring, if alternative, path. In your impatient, fast paced way, many of you follow your instincts impulsively throughout the Uranus in Aries period of 2010. When Jupiter joins Uranus in your sign, June 7 - August 14, you'll want to begin shaking up the existing structure of your life.
Jupiter, in your sign from June 7 - September 10, expands your sense of self. You could be unstoppable then as you see no limits as to what you can do. Strong self belief helps you tackle the seemingly impossible. Whilst you may be prone to taking on too much under Jupiter's influence, you've also got a lucky star behind you helping you achieve extraordinary feats.
You begin 2009 under the ongoing shadow of your ruling planet Mars' retrograde (backwards passage). Since December 19 2009 Mars has been backtracking through your creativity sector, affecting your ability to access your inner child, your playfulness and your inspiration. On March 10 his retrograde ends, and from then you'll notice the spring return to your step. Life can feel stagnant or stuck when Mars is retrograde; try to patient with life's necessary delays then. Personal growth, progress and joint investments / debt repayments may stall through this period. Use delays as opportunities to review your plans and rethink your choices. You get second chances with any significant missed opportunities through March, April and May.
The following section gives you specific information regarding 2010's planetary cycles and how they may affect you. You won't find every birthdate listed - I've only mentioned those birthdates receiving major planet transits in 2010.
If you are born March 20 - 22 unconventional Uranus passes over your Sun. Freedom, rebellion and independence become strong motivating factors. You get a sense of where in life you need to cut ties and move forward. Like breaking out of jail, your spirit seeks release. You're drawn to unorthodox experiences as you seek out a non traditional but increasingly authentic way of life.
If you are born March 21 - April 9 serious Saturn makes a difficult opposition to your Sun. Relationships with significant others come into sharp focus. Reality check your commitments to others and re-evaluate your levels of satisfaction within business and personal partnerships. A strong need to clearly define your identity, along with what you will and won't stand for, means affirming what's a priority and ending distracting involvements.
If you are born March 23 - 27 powerful Pluto makes a challenging square to your Sun. Profound transformation is now on offer as you see the ways in which life both dis-empowers and strengthens you. An intimate confrontation with your true nature helps you gain more control of your life and it's direction. Like a caterpillar, you may spend time in a cocoon this year, but ultimately you emerge like a transformed butterfly into a whole new you. Purge your life and soul of the old.

You’re in detox mode under Venus’ influence July 11 – August 7, which by then could be necessary as you’ll want to indulge through June. Consider a pure, organic eating style. Digestion is in focus so stock up on enzyme rich foods – you’ll love the improvements to your skin, hair and nails. Saturn helps you find – and stick to - a regular schedule, both at work and at home.

Expansive Jupiter moves out of your career zone early in January, bringing to a close a busy, and at times over the top, professional period. 2009 saw you focus extensively on your public roles and responsibilities, part of which involved reviewing your ultimate career goals. This year, Jupiter enters your social sector helping you connect with the right networks and groups to further the development of your big picture life and work dreams.
Saturn takes up residence in your sixth house of work, daily routine and health bringing timely reminders that structure is required to maintain wellbeing. With wellness in focus, it's time to ensure you're up to date with health checks and doctor's visits. This part of the chart relates to work, from an effort + daily routine perspective. Under Saturn's influence, you'll become increasingly aware of the physical toll of your job. Planning plenty of rest and allowing time to eat well and exercise helps keep you in shape through this hard working period. The focus of work is often practical under Saturn. Many Taurus will commit to jobs that take care of the material side of life while working towards something more meaningful over the longer term.
Planetary Cycles
The following section gives you specific information regarding this year's planetary cycles and how they may affect you.
If you are born May 9 - 18 unconventional Uranus makes a supportive yet influential link to your Sun. Uranus is about breaking rules, freedom, independence and flexibility. Your curiosity can lead you in many new directions - if you're willing to make necessary changes. Super stubborn Bulls may struggle with Uranus' demand for freedom and change so try to be flexible.
If you are born April 19 - 23 intense Pluto makes a supportive link to your Sun. Pluto's themes include death/ rebirth and total regeneration. Use this energy to transform old behaviours into new habits. Like a snake shedding a skin, a new aspect of your identity is ready to emerge.
If you are born May 12 - 18 dreamy Neptune makes a challenging link to your Sun. Neptune offers a more intuitive path forward that requires surrender and a shift in focus. Make time to develop your intuition and spiritual philosophy. Energy levels can be low, so avoid pushing yourself physically. The desire to escape can be strong so try meditation, yoga or a creative pastime rather than seeking solace in drugs or alcohol.

Overview
Expansive Jupiter fills your career sector from January 19 - June 7 and September 10 - January 22 2011. Jupiter brings growth, opportunities and expansion into your professional life. He spends just one year out every twelve in your work zone, so 2010 will be a remarkable year professionally.
Many of you notice a repetition of work themes or opportunities from 1998; the last year Jupiter energised this part of your solar horoscope. Each time this Jupiter / work theme repeats you have the chance to channel his highest potential, (which stands for fulfilling, inspiring and intuitively guided compassionate work) into your professional realms. What you may have missed out on then becomes possible now as you harness your own talents with greater personal awareness.
A particular quality of your professional life Gemini is ‘malleable boundaries'. For some, this allows you to move across industries or fields with ease; for others this acts as a scattering influence leaving you adrift with no clear career direction. While you may have trouble setting clear professional goals, focussing on the qualities and experiences you'd like at work can act as your guide. Make the most of 2010's lucky Jupiter energy by taking time to explore your sixth sense at and around work. Intuitive experiences are likely to help direct your professional life this year, especially as Jupiter and Uranus align in your career sector September 10 - 12. Trust your instincts!

If you are born June 10 - 18 Uranus makes a difficult link to your Sun. Uranus demands freedom and independence. It's time express more of your individuality and be the free spirit you are. Things won't be the same after this year, in ways you can't yet imagine.
If you are born June 13 - 19 dreamy Neptune makes a supportive link to your Sun. Neptune offers a more intuitive path forward that requires surrender and a shift in focus. Use this year to develop your intuition and a spiritual philosophy. Energy levels can be low, so avoid pushing yourself physically. Let your dreams inspire you.

Unconventional Uranus helps you break new professional ground in 2010. His teaser visit into your tenth house of career from May 29 - August 14 brings hints of the future where work, public reputation and career direction are concerned. From 2011, Uranus occupies this zone fulltime for seven years. Work may undergo change June - August as you experience Uranus as chaos and the unexpected, but you have the opportunity to experience a totally different style of professional life. Independence and freedom become more important at work as you seek to marry personal authenticity with career fulfilment in new ways.
The presence of the karmic South Node in your sign all year indicates it's through reconnecting with the past that you grow in 2010. Memories of how things were remind you of what might be as you seek to bring the best of your past into your future. While time travel may not yet be possible, reorganising your perspective on your life's history helps you change your view of what's possible.
Eclipses affecting your sign signal important turning points on January 15, June 26 and July 12. January 15's New Moon eclipse highlights new cycles in relationships, both intimate and professional. June 26's Full Moon eclipse helps you find different ways to maintain your own identity while honouring your commitments to others, and serves to illuminate the ways in which you make personal compromises to keep partnerships alive. This insight proves cathartic, helping you break old patterns. The most potent eclipse of all is the New Moon eclipse on July 12 in your sign. It heralds the start of a new cycle of personal identity, inviting you to dance with life in personally inspiring ways.

Overview
Your new year doesn't officially start until energy planet Mars returns to forward movement in your sign on March 10. Since December 19 2009, Mars has been retrograde (reverse) in your sign, causing delays with personal and professional plans. Action has taken greater effort or been non existent and you've felt stagnant. From March 10 - June 18 you'll find it generally easier to power forward in life. Plans that have stalled since late last year begin to show new potential, though you'll now alter key aspects of your original plans. This is to your benefit so adopt a flexible attitude to new possibilities. An instinctive approach to decision making is best through March and April as an impulsive quality takes over. Go with it - the hard work has been done and you will have a solid workable plan by the time April rolls around.
Trickster Mercury gives you pause professionally as he retrogrades through your work zone from April 18 - May 11. You'll be fired up personally, with Mars back on track by now, but will need to readjust professional plans and relationships. Communication planet Mercury spends an extra long period in your tenth house of career this year, from April 2 - June 10. Mercury is the traditional planet of business and this bodes well for Leos looking to set up their own business, negotiate contracts or focus on networking and retraining. Mercury's retrograde period is perfect for reviewing and reworking existing plans and contracts - delays may occur but they'll work out in your favour. Be patient with any headaches re-doings things causes. From mid May through to mid June, when Mercury is again moving forward in your work space, you'll find it a smoother process to finalise business and professional plans, especially in relation to income. Cash flow may be interrupted under Mercury's retrograde too, so try for a conservative money approach then if possible.

2010 is jam packed with a number of significant planetary aspects. By July 22 Saturn has settled into your sign, (after a preview visit from October 2009 - April 2010) and the process of remaking yourself, your physical body and your personality takes on new urgency. Expect significant others to play a large role in your personal process of change as the entry of Jupiter and Uranus into relationship sector brings critical learning experiences into your life via the realm of relationships.
Saturn first entered your sign in October 2009. Saturn's thirty year cycle is one of maturity, though it often brings tests along the way. The two - three years Saturn spends in your sign are some of your most formative. Expect to finalise big decisions about direction, relationships and who you really are. Boundaries and time are both Saturn themes and you have the cosmos onside helping your define your needs, wants and primary objectives.
Saturn is exalted (strong) in your sign, so even though you'll need to shoulder extra responsibility, it'll be for productive projects that help you build towards your future. Your physical body is your personal early warning system; when you feel tired, achy or generally worn down, that's Saturn testing you to see whether you'll listen and call time out. Give yourself a break when you notice you need it. Saturn is about work, but it's not about endless, slave driving work; it's about choosing to put your energy into the goals and dreams that are most important to you. Personally and professionally.

As 2010 begins action planet Mars is in the midst of an extended visit to your professional sector. Mars' visit began on October 17 2009 and ends on June 8. In this period Mars also has a retrograde (backwards passage) from December 19 2009 - March 10. Mars brings energy and enthusiasm for work as well as an impatient desire for professional progress. The retrograde period, until March 10, is a time to hit the career brakes. Step back from your job to review the big picture direction in which your career is taking you. Delays at work and with professional plans are likely whilst Mars is retrograde. The underlying purpose of this retrograde is to get to you to review, rethink and revise your career goals. Career and vocation don't have to be as separate as you think. Mars on side from April - June helps you put long held career plans into motion. Take the lead on work projects then; you'll have the energy of the leader / warrior behind you, making it a time for forward movement and change.
Jupiter in your health zone, from June 7 - September 10, helps you remember what's good for your wellbeing. Jupiter will be back in your health and wellness sector in 2011 for an extended visit, so use his visit this year to gain insights into what's missing from your wellbeing rituals. Jupiter links to the liver so his influence in your wellness sector is a great time to cut back on alcohol, sugar and sweets and consider a detox of some kind. Dandelion tea is a natural liver tonic so consider sipping that too. Day to day life can get extremely busy under Jupiter's influence, so while there are work and lifestyle opportunities to take advantage of, try to keep physical wellness in balance.

A thirty year professional cycle comes to end as you seek to build foundations to support your work goals in the coming thirty years. Structure is required, and a step by step long range plan helps.
Eclipses and the karmic North Node in your sign make it a year to remember as you break out of your sometimes conservative shell and live a little. The North Node only energises your sign every eighteen years, making 2010 one in which your destiny is easier to reach. The North Node entered your sign in August 2009 and stays until March 2011. The North Node brings opportunities to align the external expression of your life with your internal intentions - doing so sometimes require that you make a clean break from the safety of the past. New experiences are everywhere this year, but are you prepared to get out of your comfort zone?

Throughout the year opportunities arise to be more authentic and genuine. Important life altering choices need to be made about manifesting your soul dreams.

Your curiosity leads you in many new directions, helping you create a sense of liberation, especially if you're willing to make unconventional lifestyle choices and changes. Leave the safety of home behind for a while and explore.
If you are born December 21 - 26 intense Pluto makes an intense, once in a lifetime link to your Sun all year. Pluto's themes include death/ rebirth and total regeneration. If you are born December 21 - 27 serious Saturn makes a challenging link to your Sun from October - December. Take more responsibility for yourself and where you are going in life. Spiritual Neptune has moved through your sign since 1998. His nebulous energy has created the need for surrender and the opportunity to let go of unfulfilling attachments and commitments. Many of you have, at some point since then, had an identity crisis of sorts as you became clear on the ways in which you had outgrown your old personality. Next year, Neptune begins the transition out of your sign and you come to the end of an era. 2010 is the last year full year in which Neptune's energy strongly affects Aquarius in this lifetime. If you have yet to complete your spiritual awakening, 2010 brings the chance to do just that. Softening into the energy and emotion that fills life is part of this - something your naturally detached and intelligent self may initially find hard. Aim to be compassionate where you can. Your sensitivity continues to be strong - use the intuitive and creative awareness it gifts you for something inspiring. Late born Aquarius, (February 12 - 18) are most affected by Neptune in 2010.
Career is an area of focus and review under an extended Venus influence, from September 8 - January 8 2011. Within that period, Venus retrogrades (moves in reverse) from October 8 - November 18. The retrograde itself is a time of review, revision and refocussing where work and career are concerned. You may question your direction and rethink your longer term career goals. Venus' retrograde is rare - the last time Venus was retrograde in your tenth house of career and public image was in October and November 2002. You may notice similar themes, dreams and experiences at work and with life direction now as you did then.

If you are born January 20 - 22 unconventional Uranus makes a supportive sextile to your Sun. This offers you a taste of freedom and the desire for more independence. Emerging philosophies about individuality help you explore authenticity in life rather than sticking with the conventional path.
If you are born January 21 - February 6 serious Saturn makes a supportive trine to your Sun. Saturn's themes of hard work, commitment and responsibility give you the strength needed to achieve your goals. The Sun symbolises your identity and Saturn's link to the Sun helps you redefine who you are. Setting clear boundaries never felt so good.
If you are born February 13 - 18 soulful Neptune passes over your Sun. Your personal journey this year centres on letting go and surrendering. Life may feel insubstantial or not real as the dream-like qualities of Neptune override rational clarity. Take time out from professional and family plans to explore your spiritual and creative side.

Overview
2010 is a big year, full of growth, lucky connections and abundant opportunities. Longer term astrological patterns start shifting, giving you insight into what your next phase is about.
Your co-ruler Jupiter spends most of this year in your sign, expanding your life, your sense of self and your perspective on the future. Everything grows under Jupiter's touch, especially your connection to spirit and divinity. Jupiter's expansive influence may be the missing link you need to open yourself more completely to esoteric knowledge. Jupiter is in your sign from January 19 - June 7 and again from September 10 - January 22 2011. Expect life to be busy, full and generally positive through this time. Jupiter's purest influence is to expand, so what's good about your life becomes great then and what's average demands your full attention so you can make improvements. Jupiter gifts you with a generally positive and optimistic outlook, which makes it easier to see the glass of life half full.
Jupiter links to your career sector and his strong energy in 2010 makes it a great year to reach for your work dreams. Your soft, fluid approach serves you well professionally, so be flexible with professional plans. Your mood and motivation for work ebbs and flows throughout the year - when the muses grab you, be productive, when they don't, rest. The passage of inspired Mars through your career zone, from October 28 - December 7, is a time of high productivity and progress at work as you begin a two year career cycle. Plant seeds then for those career opportunities you'd like to grow in the coming two years.
Planetary Cycles
The following section gives you specific information regarding this year's planetary cycles and how they may affect you. You won't find every birthdate listed - I've only mentioned those birthdates receiving major planet transits in 2010.
If you are born February 23 - 26 transformative Pluto makes a supportive sextile to your Sun. 2010 is ripe with opportunities for you to transform from the caterpillar to the butterfly, via a cocoon like experience. You'll willingly enter into a period of simplicity as you seek to become who you have the potential to be. Harnessing your own creative power is key to your personal evolution this year.
If you are born March 13 - 21 unconventional Uranus passes over your Sun. This presents unexpected but exciting opportunities to embrace previously hidden or suppressed parts of your personality. You may rebel against limits, structure and authority as Uranus encourages you to push boundaries and create freedom. Liberation is an important underlying theme.
If you are born March 17 - 21 wise Saturn makes a difficult opposition to your Sun. The opportunity to redefine your identity exists though you'll have to lay clear boundaries and accept new responsibility through the process. Balance is needed between doing what's right for you and maintaining your commitment to significant others.

Elements and Modalities
The 12 Zodiac signs are divided and divided again to create a unique mix of modalities and elements for each sign. The first division of the Zodiac signs is by element. There are four elements - Fire, Earth, Air and Water. There are 3 Zodiac signs which fall into each element. The second division of the Zodiac is by modality. There are three modalities - Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. There are 4 Zodiac signs which fall into each modality. This means each Zodiac sign is a unique combination of Element and Modality. Read on to find out more.
Elements
The elements describe the physical expression of the Zodiac signs. The four elements are the basis of all matter and the building blocks of the natural world. Like a single seed that requires heat, water, oxygen and soil to thrive the Zodiac is built upon an equal mix of these essential compounds. Each Zodiac sign is described according to one element. Understanding the elements gives you a "first glance" understanding of the Zodiac signs themselves.
The elements also represent four key psychological functions. To understand the Zodiac signs in full, we'll look at the elements from both physical and psychological perspectives. The elements reflect primary functions of our mental/spiritual existence. We need passion and action (Fire) to motivate and inspire us; we require practicality (Earth) to keep us grounded, logic and intellect (Air) to provide us with information and facts, and feelings and emotions (Water) to connect us.
Fire and Air signs are Yang/ Masculine. They are expressive, social and extroverted. Earth/ Water are Yin/ Feminine. They are private, introspective and reflective. The Element a person's Sun sign falls into shows the primary motivating force of that individual.
When thinking of a person's Sun sign (or any other planet), the elements provide a great starting block to begin decoding the language of Astrology. To help you fully understand the Elements, take a moment to make a few notes before reading ahead. Think of a "fiery" person you know. What kinds of words would you use to describe them? What colours or energies do you start to pick up on? Now think of a friend you would describe as "earthy". How would you describe them? What words, colours and images come to mind?
Now think of someone you know who is "airy" or an airhead. How do you picture them? What colours and words do you envisage? And finally think of a "watery" person. What kinds of words and images do you pick up on? Make some notes on what your initial interpretation is of each element before reading ahead.
Fire: ACTION
Aries Leo Sagittarius
Keywords
Feisty, assertive, bold, hot tempered, passionate, inspired, motivated, outgoing, inspiring, impulsive, courageous, dramatic
The Fire Element manifests as passionate, inspiring ACTION. This element is full of life and always seeking the next adventure or challenge. Fire signs are always on a mission or setting off on an adventure. Programmed to be courageous and met every challenge, it is difficult for these signs to apply logic and practicality. At their most instinctive fire signs desire excitement and action. Fire signs enjoy a challenge and will not run from an opportunity to prove their strength. Marked by feelings of invincibility, fire signs can fall into the trap of taking on more than they can manage. Fearless and brave, fire signs make good leaders.
Earth: GROUNDING
Taurus Virgo Capricorn
Keywords
Grounded, practical, stable, reliable, solid, dependable, sensible, realistic, cautious, reserved, conservative
The Earth Element correlates to PRACTICALITY and taking a considered approach. Practical and grounded, earth signs push feelings and passion to the side and make decisions based on the "right" thing to do. Solid and reliable, earth signs are often towers of strength. Earth signs are not prone to flights of fancy, and weigh up the pros and cons (including financial considerations) before deciding on a course of action. Stable and dependable, these are the "doers" of the zodiac. Earth signs see things through, for better of for worse. Earth signs are connected to resources, money and achievement.
Air: THINKING
Gemini Libra Aquarius
Keywords
Talkative, curious, intellectual, chatty, up in their head, good talkers, networkers, information gatherers, idealists, debaters
Air corresponds to the MENTAL function and craves communication. Air signs love to discuss concepts and ideals. Air signs spend lots of time in communication and study. They always want more information and make great debaters and arguers. Commonly described as scatty, stuck in their head or a little off the planet, air signs are often so involved in what's going on in their mind they find it difficult to focus on practical matters. Mentally quick, they represent the ability and desire to learn and share information.
Water: FEELING
Cancer Scorpio Pisces
Keywords
Emotional, sensitive, intuitive, caring, nurturing, imaginative, spiritual, perceptive, creative, artistic
The Water Element corresponds to the FEELING or emotional function. Watery types are motivated by what they feel rather than logic or practicality. Feelings are paramount and considered in all decisions. Following intuition and inner knowings is important to the water signs. Water signs are aware of the emotion or feeling in their environment and those around them. They are moody and dreamy, sensitive and caring. Sharing feelings and connecting through emotion is very important to the Water signs.
Modalities
The next division is by modality of the Zodiac signs. There are 3 modalities - cardinal, fixed and mutable. These relate to the "modes of operation" for each sign. One sign from each element falls into each modality.
Cardinal Signs are signs that actively seek or initiate change. Cardinal signs are concerned with survival - of themselves (Aries), their tribe (Cancer) their partners (Libra) and their position in society (Capricorn). Cardinal signs are action orientated and quick to respond to changes in circumstance. They take action as and when it's needed to ensure basic needs are met and protected. Cardinal signs are known for their ability to initiate and get things started. Cardinal signs are instinctive and motivated by primal drives. The Cardinal signs mark the turning points in the seasons. March, June, September and December are months when the season changes in response to the Sun reaching key points in the sky. As the Sun brightens and dims through the year we physically undergo a shift in light and warmth here on Earth. When the Sun moves into Aries and Libra it's the Equinox (equal day/ night) and the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. As the Sun moves into Cancer and Capricorn it's the Solstice (longest day/ night) and the primary seasons of summer and winter.
The 4 cardinal signs reflect the basic needs of humanity - to hunt (Aries), to procreate (Cancer), to relate (Libra) and to achieve (Capricorn).
Fixed Signs represent the middle of the seasons where life continues in familiar form. The Sun moves through the fixed signs in the middle of each season. Fixed signs are averse to change and prefer continuity. These signs see the value in "reaping what you sow" and seek to build success and safety through building on past successes. By their nature, fixed signs resist change and seek to repeat tried and true habits. Some of their mottos are likely to be: "This is the way I have always done things. Why would I do it differently?" "That has always worked for me." Fixed signs crave security and stability. Fixed signs are stubborn, reliable and dependable. After the basic needs of survival have been meet (Cardinal signs), it's time to build on what you have. Think of cardinal signs as nomadic - moving to where the food or shelter is. The fixed signs are aligned with agricultural and farming principles.
A strong dislike of change marks the fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.
Mutable signs carry the blueprint for change. Mutable signs prefer the fluidity of life constantly in flux. Mutable signs are open to new ways of being, doing or thinking. When the Sun passes through the mutable signs (February, May, August and November) we are in the final month of a season. Mutable signs carry an inherent awareness that change is a natural part of life. Mutable signs are fluid and flexible, easily adapting to new situations. These signs easily adapt and are quick on their feet. Mutable signs are the chameleons of the Zodiac and are naturally curious. Mutable signs are ready to move on at a moment's notice making them subjective and easily led.
The mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius & Pisces.
A story to help you remember:
Three people are sitting in a room. It's hot outside and the air conditioner has broken. The cardinal sign grabs the tool box and attempts to fix the air conditioner. The fixed sign stews about how this isn't meant to happen, the machine should still be working. The mutable sign opens their shift collar and thinks "a least I won't catch a cold."
Mercury Retrogrades for 2009 and 2010
Mercury appears to move backwards at 3 different periods throughout 2010. In 2010 the emphasis from Mercury's retrogrades is on the earth signs/element. Mercury Retrograde is traditionally a time to hold off signing important documents or contracts. Instead take time to review or rethink major decisions. It's a time for reflection and research.
You'll think about new directions relating to all areas of your life including friends, relationships, career, money and family, but avoid making any choices until Mercury returns to forward movement again. Each Mercury Retrograde last for about three weeks. Of course, you can expect all the usual hiccups, like having to reschedule plans at the last minute, rearrange your diary or life and deal with misunderstandings or crossed wires due to a communication breakdown of some sort.
Transport and communication are two areas which typically suffer during Mercury Retrogrades. Double check computer back ups, make copies of anything important you're working on and be prepared for technical and communication hiccups like mobile dropouts or delays with travel. That said, it is a good time to be on holidays - just make sure everything is organised before Mercury goes backwards.
You'll be most affected by Mercury retrograde effect if it falls in your sign. As they are ruled by Mercury, Geminis and Virgos are always challenged through these periods. If your career point or MC is ruled by either Gemini or Virgo, you may also find these periods particularly delay prone regarding work and professional matters.
Shadow Periods
Right before and immediately after a planet goes retrograde it moves through the part of the Zodiac/sky that it will be or has just been reversing through. This is the shadow area. Ie If Mercury will be retrograde from 25 Aries back to 10 Aries, the period where it covers the space from 10 Aries to 25 Aries while moving forwards is it's shadow. This happens in the lead up the retrograde and right after. The shadow period occurs right before and just after the retrograde itself. Because Mercury (or any other planet), is covering "tainted" ground at this time it's said to be still a little off and not at it's strongest.
In 2010 Mercury is travelling backwards between:
December 25 2009 - January 15, from 21 - 5 Capricorn
April 18 - May 11, from 12 - 2 Taurus
August 20 - September 11, from 19 - 5 Virgo
December 10 - 29, from 5 Capricorn - 19 Sagittarius.

What's your Relationship Star Sign
Just like you, your relationship has a Star (Sun) sign. Everything has a moment in time when it begins, including your relationships. Astrology follows the understanding that whenever anything begins here on Earth it carries the cosmic imprint of the planets as they were aligned at that moment.
Commonly known as your anniversary, your Relationship Sun sign reveals the secrets to what works and what doesn't work in your relationship.
Think back to when your relationship started (whether it's a current relationship or one from your past). Use the guide below to determine where the Sun was on that day. This shows the true nature of your relationship, good and bad.
Some relationship signs are better for long distance love, and others more suited to a blissful domestic life. Certain couples are better at commitment and others are more suited to a casual fling. Where does your relationship fit in?
Instead of trying to force your relationship to be something it's not, use your Relationship Sign to help make the most of what your relationship has to offer.

Astrology: A Beginner's Guide
Your Secrets Revealed: How The Stars Reveal Your Destiny
Your Astrology Chart (birth chart) is a snapshot of the sky taken at the moment you were born, looking up at the sky from the place on Earth at which you arrived. Astrologers use a combination of planets, signs and houses to determine your destiny. Planets are like characters in a play; they act. Signs are like the clothes a character in a play wears; they tell us about the character. Houses are like the set on stage; they show where in life action is happening.
An Astrologer will draw up or print out (as it's done these days) this sky map of your birth. To do so they will need your time, date and place of birth. The birth chart is a unique tool for self discovery.
Your birth chart can tell you:
*your strengths and weaknesses
*what turns you on sexually and physically
*the types of relationships you'll attract
*the relationship style that works best for you
*what your purpose is in life
*what type of career most fulfils you
*how you earn and spend money - and how to save
When you first look at your birth chart it looks like a big circle with 12 sections (the Houses) full of hieroglyphics. The symbols on the outside of the circle are the Zodiac signs. The symbols on the inside of the circle are the planets.
Astrology is a simple art of learning symbols and then putting them together. Think about when you are driving. You recognise signs for roundabouts, no left or right turns, slippery when wet etc. You are using symbols to understand a concept, instruction or direction. Astrology is a lot like driving. Look at the symbols, learn what they mean, then follow the directions.
Houses
Houses are segments of the chart. Each House represents a different area of life. The House a planet falls in shows where in life you express and meet that planet's energy.
If you look at an Astrological Chart you'll see a horizontal line directly through the middle - the Ascendant line. The Ascendant is the left point on this horizontal line. The First House starts at the Ascendant. The Houses then move anti clockwise around.

The Zodiac signs show the characteristics that a planet takes on. Mars is the principle of energy and getting things done. Whichever sign Mars falls into shows the style Mars will adopt to get things done in your life. Angelina Jolie has Mars (action, energy and confidence) in Aries (self focussed, impulsive and enthusiastic). She does what she wants when she needs to. Mars in Aries is confident independence.

Planets
Each planet represents a different function of the psyche. They represent different desires inside you. Venus is the part of you that wants to connect with others and form relationships. Uranus is the part of you that wants to rebel and stand out from the crowd. Planets are like bolts of energy. Once you have a simple understanding of each planet, look to see what sign the planet falls in. The sign a planet falls in shows how you set about meeting that planet's basic urge or desire. Venus (relationships) in Gemini (witty, conversational) shows someone who uses their mind (Mercury) to flirt (Gemini) and build relationships (Venus).

Planetary Cycles and Relationships: Astrological insight into the rhythm of relationship
Ever wonder why so many of your relationships don't get past the 2 year mark? Or why when they do, the 7 year itch proves so challenging? Or are you envious of couples who are still going strong after 12 years of love and happiness? Planetary cycles can provide insight as to why specific anniversaries highlight certain issues in relationships. You will notice these cycles with partners of all kinds, including friends, business associates, acquaintances and family.
Each of the 10 planets, (including the Sun and Moon) has its own unique cycle. In cyclical work such as this we are most concerned with planetary cycles that complete in one life time. This excludes the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto with their extended cycles.
The Sun
The Sun and Moon move almost too quickly to have a great effect. The Zodiac sign the Sun is in when the relationship begins indicates the tone or flavour of your relationship. When the Sun returns to where it was when the relationship started, 1 year has passed and you celebrate your anniversary. This return of the Sun is the "birthday" of your relationship and shows a time when creative energies of one person can support the other.

The Moon
The Moon's cycle is short covering the entire Zodiac every month. The Moon reflects emotions and shows the daily change of feeling. The phase of the Moon at the start of each relationship can give an indication of the emotional flow within the partnership.

The middle planets
The middle planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn), have cycles varying in length from 13 months to 29 years. They all make returns during an average lifetime. A planet is said to "return" when it moves completely through the sky from the point it was when you were born, or met that special someone, and returns again to that same point. For example, you might have begun a new relationship in May 2005 when Mars was in Pisces. Through April of 2007 your relationship birth chart would have experienced a Mars return as Mars passed again through Pisces.
During a planet's return themes and issues linked to that planet become more important in your relationship. Often you'll face dilemmas or opportunities tied up with the returning planets energy. A planet's return also provides a great time to start afresh in areas that planet rules, like the beginning of most cycles.
(NB these returns refer to the birth chart of the relationship, not of the individuals in the relationship.)
Mercury
Mercury has a cycle of approximately 1 year and is associated with communication, thought, speech, connection, bringing things together, conceptualizing and networking. The energy supporting the communication that brought the two of you together repeats around the 1 year mark. Think back to how you got through to that special someone when you first dated. Try some of those tactics again now. The chance to recapture that first spark of intelligence and depth of conversation that pulled you into another's orbit is possible. As Mercury returns, thoughts and conversations return to the same topics you discussed in the beginning. As you go over the same subjects, you bring the added level of depth and intimacy gained from a year together and can learn even more about your partner.
Communication now helps highlight areas of both strength and disappointment in your partnership. During this period spend time developing new communication skills and styles together. Problems may arise from a lack of understanding due to miscommunication or misunderstanding. Through a Mercury return it's important to talk to each other honestly. Open communication can help solve many problems that crop up now as you contemplate a second, third or fourth year together. If things are going well, you can harness the energy of Mercury to deepen the levels of communication between each and forge stronger ties of trust and understanding.
Venus
Venus takes about 13 months to move around the Sun and the period following a one-year anniversary is likely to be charged with Venusian themes. How do your two individuals relating styles differ? How do you show support for each other? How is love given or received? What values drive your relationship? How do you manage money, jointly or separately? Does this leave one of you paying more or do you split things 50/50? Common themes now relate to managing different values and expectations around pleasure and love. The Venus return offers a chance to reconnect with each other and harmonise your values around love and money. On a positive note, this can be a really affectionate and lovely time, as the romantic energy that brought the two of you together repeats. This means falling madly in love with your partner all over again is a real possibility now!
Mars
Most people are familiar with the "terrible twos" phase toddlers go through as they assert their independence and identity. Mars takes approx 2 years to complete a cycle and the assertion of independence at the 2 year mark can lead to power struggles. Every two years Mars returns to the position he was in at the start of the relationship and your relationship goes through its own version of the terrible twos!
Wilful, headstrong, aggressive and sexual energy shows its demanding face around the 2 year mark. If either of you feel as though the relationship has clipped your wings it's now, at the Mars return, that you'll need to reassert yourself. This can throw your relationship out of balance as roles change and power shifts. If you've been the passive partner it can be Mars' energy that encourages you to speak up more.
Hasty, rash and regrettable decisions can be made in a fit of anger. An increase in relationship energy now indicates it's time to find new goals to achieve either individually or as a couple. The trick is to direct this excess of energy into working together for the relationship, otherwise meltdown can happen quickly! What will be your focus be for the next two years now the initial passion has cooled? More energy devoted to physical pleasure and intimacy at this time can help you stay connected. Passion and anger are two sides of the same energy and you'll find you dance from one extreme to the other now.
Mars reflects how you assert yourself to ensure your needs are met, including sexual desires. Issues around "my" time versus "we" time can come up. Competitiveness may be a theme. Acknowledging each individuals need for personal space and alone time can ease relationship pressure. It's time for the relationship to strike out in some new direction. Find ways to allow each of you extra independence and space.
Jupiter
Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, takes 12 years to orbit the Sun. Every 12 years your relationship experiences a Jupiter Return. In keeping with Jupiter's size, his cycle is tied into "things getting bigger" that is, life gets a whole lot bigger and more demanding when Jupiter is active. Energetically this translates into more opportunity, more expansion and more love. This often manifests as the desire to broaden your horizons. Within the context of a relationship this provides opportunities for joint learning or travel. A couple's social life can get very hectic around the 12 year mark.
Jupiter is also associated with optimism and personal faith, so deepening your relationship through spiritual or philosophical pursuits is ideal. This can correlate to couples making a commitment of faith either through marriage or other significant life events (like parenthood). Generally this is an abundant and lucky time in the relationship, however "things getting bigger" can also apply to some of the challenging aspects in the relationship, so don't avoid anything that requires work in your partnership now. Jupiter blesses you with a lot of faith and trust which will be beneficial to call on at this time. Jupiter loves anything new and foreign and the Jupiter phase every 12 years can bring up feelings of restlessness or thoughts of "the grass is greener" in one or both partners. The Jupiter Return time is a perfect period in which to fall in love again. Taking an extended holiday together or making a spiritually driven life change now are appropriate ways to honour Jupiter's energy. Your relationship will need more space, time and energy at Jupiter's return.
Saturn
Saturn is often given such a bad rap in Astrology. It's true he calls you to task if you're not holding up your end of the bargain. However he also gives you the tenacity to see things through, in good times and bad, which is essential for any long term relationship.
Saturn takes approximately 28 years to return to his original position in your relationship chart. During this period he will make 3 challenging aspects; the first after 7 years, the second at 14 years and the third at 21 years. The "seven year itch" can be attributed to these aspects within the Saturn cycle. Saturn reminds us, often through challenging experiences, exactly what our fears and limitations are. He also shows us how to survive our deepest fears when we must face them.
The Saturn cycle is about maturing and growing. These things occur over time and Saturn is not one to rush. Responsibilities must be accepted and honoured. Achievement is obvious only with the passing of time. During Saturn periods (at the 7 yr, 14 yr and 21 yr mark) your relationship can seem difficult and barren. Through these periods you are unconsciously asked to work through difficulties and take stock of all you've achieved together. Saturn requires you to honour commitments and promises even when the going gets tough. The other face of Saturn is the diligence and sense of enduring commitment that enables you to keep working at your relationship even during the challenging times.
Saturn phases in relationships are periods of re-evaluating and re-committing. Common events during Saturn phases include the struggle to find space for an intimate relationship within the demanding role of parenting or professional responsibilities; the juggle/struggle to make ends meet financially and separations due to work or other family commitments (i.e. ill parents).
The Saturn return phase of a relationship (around the 29th year) is a time when the boundaries in your partnership need to be redefined. Typically at this time, roles within the union change.

The planetary cycles can remind us of the undercurrents of our relationships. As cycles repeat, you have a chance to reconnect with the energy that conspired to bring you into the orbit of that special someone in the first place. The planets' themes highlight how you can keep the flame alive even after many years of being together. Their cycles also offer solutions for the way through challenges that may arise within your relationship. Having an awareness of what is prompting your trusted partner's sudden display of anger or discomfort, for example, can help make a difficult time merely a rough patch rather than an ending.
At times, it's necessary to reaffirm your feelings for your partner. Remembering how and why you feel in love with them in the first place can help to forge stronger ties for the future. On the other hand, in a relationship that's not working, the planetary cycles might remind you that you were full of lust when Cupid's arrow struck, and moving on might be the best thing.

An Interview on the Moon By Kelly Surtees
What is the meaning of the Moon in the birth chart?
The Moon represents feelings and emotions. Like the Moon in the sky reflecting the Sun's light, the Moon in the birth chart is reflective, soulful and sensitive. The Moon represents the instinctive, intuitive part of you. When you respond without thinking, almost as if driven by primal instinct, that is the Moon acting in your life. The Moon is also a symbol for mother and by sign shows what you need to feel nurtured. Aspects, (lines of energy), from other planets to the Moon describe your relationship to "Mum", plus shows how well you understand your own emotional needs or not as the case may be.
How does the Moon affect our path through life?
The Moon influences in a subtle yet meaningful way. Decisions that aren't necessarily logical or explainable, but are intrinsically important, are Moon based decisions. The Moon craves safety, security and comfort and the unique path to create these qualities in our lives is described by the Moon. The Moon, being an inner, yin and subjective energy doesn't need external achievements; instead it's the quiet moments with loved ones, in places that are familiar to us, that bring the Moon most joy. The Moon is the unspoken guiding force that craves emotional attachment and a sense of safety. The sign, house and aspects of the Moon describe the unique experience of "home," safety and connection for you.
Does it affect us on a daily basis?
The Moon moves through the entire sky (and therefore the whole birth chart) once every 28 days, changing signs about every 48hours. As the Moon moves through the Zodiac she makes a unique passage through your birth chart. When the Moon moves through your 1st house you think about yourself; when the Moon is moving through your 7th House you think about those you love. The Moon affects everyone on a daily basis but in different ways. Her movement around the sky (and the birth chart) is like the second hand on a clock ticking off 48 hour intervals that highlight different areas (via the houses) of your life.
Dose the phase of the Moon affect us?
Yes. The phase of the Moon you are most affected by is the Moon phase you were born under. I.e. if you were both when the Sun and Moon are opposite (at a Full Moon) then every month you will be extra sensitive and highly fertile (both physically and creatively) at the Full Moon. Find out what Moon phase you were born under and watch as you notice the extra inspiration that is on offer to you at that time each month.

Pluto: Planet or Not? A piece written for The Tree Magazine
The planet Pluto made headlines recently when it was demoted from full planet status. This name change doesn't alter the fact that Pluto is still out there, but what happens in astrology when a new planet is discovered (like Pluto in 1930 or Neptune in 1846)? Did Pluto's discovery mean that all horoscopes prior to 1930 were suddenly void? What about the discovery of new "dwarf planets" and asteroids like Ceres? Do they have the same impact on astrology as new planets?
Pluto has been the subject of hot debate recently as the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified their definition of a planet. Historically astrology and astronomy were intimately linked, with practitioners of one being experts in the other. Through the renaissance period cracks in the relationship between astronomy and astrology started to show. Since that time debate has raged about the validity of astrology with astronomers claiming the science trump card. The basic premise of astrology is to observe the sky and attribute meaning to what's seen in the heavens in accords with what happens at the same time here on Earth. I.E The Moon moves the tides, up and down. We observe this. Meaning is then attributed to the Moon that covers fluctuations, moodiness, ebbs and flows. The Moon has no light of her own; we observe her reflecting the light of the Sun. The Moon is then linked to receptiveness. It's really quite simple!
Ancient cultures observed the night sky and noted that most stars were fixed, yet a few seemed to move against the backdrop of other stars. The term planet referred to these "wandering stars". The Heinemann Australian Dictionary defines a planet as "any body that does not produce light and revolves around a star." That covers almost everything in the sky except the sun. These definitions are now too broad to clearly classify the rapidly increasing number and types of different rock bodies that exist. Recent resolutions on the definition of a planet were the first clear specifications set out by the IAU. There are now 3 types of orbiting bodies, classified according to their size, shape and affect on their immediate area. Much debate has raged (astronomically) about Pluto's status since he was discovered in 1930. His super small shape and irregular orbit cast him as an anomaly when compared with other planets.
Over the past few years a number of bodies have been discovered beyond Neptune, collectively known as Trans-Neptunian's. Like in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter there are thousands of Trans-Neptunian's, with more being discovered all the time. Trans-Neptunian's orbit in what's known as the Kuiper Belt (coincidentally where Pluto orbits). Continuing advancements in technology mean we can now see previously "invisible" smaller bodies further out into the solar system, like those in the Kuiper Belt. The IAU could be seen to simply be moving with the times in reaching their recent resolution on the definition of a planet. (NB Only a small percentage of the registered members in the union voted - less than 500 out of over 2700.) As more and more bodies are discovered, more precise methods of classification will be needed, at least for the astronomical community.
How does all this affect astrology? In short it doesn't. Astrologers leapfrog on the back of astronomers to grab the latest cosmic discoveries. Once the cycle of the new body is clarified (astrologers need this for predictive purposes) astrologers hot foot it back to their workshops to integrate the new body. There is no one person or body in astrological circles that decides what a new body is called or means. In fact naming rights go to the discovering astronomer. Once a planet has been christened (usually with some Greek, Roman or Egyptian deity) the myths relating to that character are mulled over by astrologers around the world. Astrologers have free reign to add meaning to new bodies. It's quite a magical process observing astrologers in different places coming up with similar themes and concerns for each new planet (dwarf or otherwise). It matters little to astrologers how astronomers define new bodies; if it's out there, it has an influence, regardless of its formal status (according to the basic premise of astrology).
Ceres, along with many other bodies of rock orbiting between Mars and Jupiter, is known astrologically as an asteroid. Ceres, (one of the biggest asteroids) was discovered early in the 19th century. Ceres is used in conjunction with a number of other prominent asteroids (including Chiron) by specialist asteroid astrologers. Asteroids are primarily feminine and one theory states that the emerging use of asteroids in astrological practice is a nod to the re-emergence of the feminine powers in society.
In the 70 odd years since Pluto's discovery easy consensus has formed (amongst astrologers) around the myths and qualities Pluto carries. Looking back in time, the themes attributed to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were symbolic of the events and changes occurring in the world at the time of their discovery. Uranus was discovered in 1781 during periods of great civil unrest in many countries around the world. In astrology today Uranus is about unexpected, but needed, change. His keyword is disruption. Neptune's discovery in 1846 came through the middle of the Victorian era, where romanticism ran rampant. Fashions were becoming a focus and creative and spiritual movements gathered momentum. Neptune is linked to fantasy, creativity and the pursuit of the divine. Pluto's discovery in 1930 came as the world discovered nuclear power and the concept of world wide destruction entered the consciousness. Pluto represents the process of complete transformation, like death and rebirth.
As new planets are discovered they are added into the astrological body of knowledge. A new discovery doesn't mean previous horoscopes are null and void. A comprehensive understanding of the original 7 planets allows a professional astrologer to create very detailed horoscopes; the addition of new bodies only serves to clarify what already exists in astrological symbolism.
It's hard to say what influence new dwarf planets will have on the future of astrology. There are as many different theories on this as there are astrologers. Like any profession astrology has a conservative mainstream plus extreme branches on the left and right. There will always be a pocket of astrologers committed to the original 7 planets, a mainstream group that incorporates key new bodies (like major dwarf planets and asteroids) and an alternative branch who will use every little piece of cosmological rock they can get their hands on. In the wider astrological community new bodies and planets (of all sizes) will be embraced. Astrologers generally stay informed about new developments even if they choose not to use them personally.
As a lay person heading off for a reading, or a budding astrologer beginning studies, you can rest assured that in whichever form astrology presents it self to you, your teacher or astrologer has up to date information about the planets (dwarf or otherwise) they use. New bodies will continue to be discovered at increasing rates as technology continues to advance. The process of integrating new energies into astrology takes time and emerges from group discussion, taking into account all that's happening in the world at the time of their discovery. The rocks that rock easily stand the test of time and their astrological myths will remain in place for centuries.

Saturn "Magnificent Saturn"
"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted." Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
Saturn demands discipline and concentrated effort. In the birth chart Saturn represents the part of you capable of planning and providing for the future. Saturn is linked to achievement over time. He works from within to encourage you to create tangible results in your life. Saturn is happy when you have security in different areas of life and respect for what you do. Everyone has a unique relationship to Saturn depending on the Zodiac Sign and House of Saturn and any aspects he makes to other planets in our birth chart. This article will introduce you to some of the key themes of Saturn and provide a guide for the two Saturn returns at approx 29 & 58.
Who is Saturn and what does he represent?
Astronomically Saturn is the last heavenly body you can see with your naked eye. Until the discovery of Uranus in 1781 Saturn represented the boundary of the solar system. It took technology and the developments of science to take us as a human race beyond the bounds of Saturn's realm. This concept of "boundaries" is integral to understanding Saturn in the birth chart. Saturn describes how you create boundaries. What is a boundary? It is a definitive separation of one thing from another. I am separate from you; we have different bodies. Everyone keeps emotional, physical, sexual and spiritual boundaries in different areas of their lives. Saturn shows where your limits are. During Saturn transits (like the Saturn return) boundaries are tested, stretched and renegotiated.
Saturn appears in both Greek and Roman myths. In Greece he is Cronos, Father of Time, and represents time both seasonally and globally. In Rome, he is Saturn, God of agriculture and reaping and sowing grain. Astrologically Saturn represents the rewards of time and the concept of getting back what you put into life. Just rewards are what Saturn offers - nothing more, nothing less.
When driven by fear Saturn manifests as caution and hesitation. When we are afraid, Saturn is the part of us that demands retreat and focus on survival. When secure in your life Saturn encourages and sustains commitment towards long term goals. Saturn shows your tests and challenges in this lifetime. Saturn is in no hurry and gives lasting rewards once earned and not a moment before. He is the planet that shows lasting success and sustainable achievement.
In the birth chart Saturn's placement by sign, house and aspect also depicts your experience of "father". The type of relationship you did or didn't have with Dad, the kinds of things you might have liked or had to give up around your father figure - are all described by Saturn. Astrologically "Father" describes our actual father (or the story around Dad not being here) as well as the "father or authority figure" within. Saturn shows your ability to follow laws and conform to society's guidelines. Saturn is the inner conscience, your sense of right and wrong.
Saturn reminds you no amount of fast tracking can hurry the seasons of your life. You are linked into a unique cosmic clock that indicates your personal path to glory, as long as you are willing to do the work along the way. Saturn, through his trials and tribulations, helps you discover your strength. Confronting fears, meeting life's challenges and moving through difficult events all help deepen your sense of personal trust and awareness of your inner strength. This too is Saturn's influence in your life.
Saturn represents tradition and respect for the ways of old. Someone who has Saturn strongly placed in the birth chart (Saturn in aspect to the Ascendant, Sun or Moon or someone who has several planets in Capricorn) is an individual happy to conform, apply effort and work hard towards something over time. Saturn represents wisdom distilled through aging. Someone with a strong Saturn in their chart often seems old before their time and in fact lightens up as they get older.
Think about the things you are proud of achieving in your life. A body of work, a healthy family, professional success - how much sweeter are the rewards when you've worked hard for something? Reflect on what you consider to be some of your greatest achievements and hardest fought battles in life. This will show how Saturn works for you.
Keywords for Saturn include:

challenges
responsibility
authority
restriction

hesitation
isolation
tradition
respect for the past
The Saturn Cycle
Saturn's orbit is circular and his 28 yr cycle can be broken down into 4 x 7 year phases. Ever heard of the 7 year itch? Astrologers understand this commonly accepted phenomenon through the testing energy of Saturn re-emerging in your life every 7 years. Your personal Saturn cycles coincide with returns around 29 and 58, however our lives are punctuated by random Saturn periods depending on our personal birth chart.* If you are going through a difficult time now, think back to the choices and decisions you made 7 years before. There is always an on, (for the second time) in 1999 comes to see me as she is starting to drift apart from her husband. We discuss the cycle of Saturn and she comes to understand that the original commitments she and her husband made when they first married needs to be reworked. Their original commitment to their teenage children (from previous marriages) is no longer as important as they have now left home. Either they make a commitment to each other in a new way or decide to end the relationship. This is applicable on your 14 and 21st wedding anniversaries too. Saturn's cycle of testing 7year phases is applicable to all areas of your life - work, study, travel and relationships.
The Saturn Return, both at 29 and again at 59 (ages are approx and need to be confirmed with your local Astrologer), heralds a significant rite of passage. Astrologically Saturn represents time. The passage of time reflects mortality.
In his link to time our journey with Saturn is also about understanding and being realistic about our mortality. We are born, we live, we die. Inevitable. At key points along our life journey (like the Saturn Return) we may confront this mortality a little more closely than we'd like - through illness or the loss/separation from friends or family.
First Saturn Return 29
The first Saturn return at 29 symbolises the transition from child to adult astrologically. By the end of the first Saturn cycle, Saturn has passed over every planet in the birth chart, moved through every house and Zodiac sign and made every kind of aspect he can make in your chart. Your life has revealed your strengths and weaknesses according to your personal birth chart. Through life's tests you have set boundaries, either consciously or unconsciously, about what you will and won't accept. You've made it clear, to yourself, to those around you and to the cosmos what you are willing to stand for and what you will stand against.
The first Saturn return brings you to a peak. Decisions are made about what is and isn't working in your life. Endings occur as people, places and situations that no longer serve you or reflect your current place in life move away. This is an opportune time to clear the slate to make a fresh start for the next cycle. Past life karma is said to be discharged at the first Saturn Return leaving you with less baggage to carry into the future.
Marriages are tested and old commitments need to be renegotiated. Relationships end as you realise you've outgrown the people you've been involved with. Authentic commitments are solidified as others marry or decide to pursue parenthood. Professional promotions are possible for those who've worked towards a truly personal career goal. Career transition is more likely for those who've created a profession more aligned to what others expect of them rather than what they want for themselves.
The first Saturn return is a time of confirming commitments for the next 29 years and making this known formally to others.
Second Saturn return approx 58
Many of us face, contemplate or start seriously planning for retirement at this age. Children have grown up demanding you forge a new relationship as adults to your children. Grand parenting is now likely and new boundaries need to be made around how involved you will be with children of your children. You are more aware than ever that you've aged and may find yourself taking on more responsibility in caring for your own parents. Long term marriages are sometimes challenged - especially if you married on your first Saturn return around 29. New relationship needs require negotiating. Much has changed since you first got together and shifting priorities need to be reflected in your personal relationships. Accepting reality and making choices for the future based on genuine needs is essential as is acting with integrity. Endings to significant chapters in one's life are likely now.
Both Saturn returns reflect the aging process. Realisations occur at both 29 and 58 about physical limits. You become acutely aware you aren't getting any younger. Youthful dreams and lifelong plans need to be renegotiated in your own heart. Reality rears its head and it becomes apparent that some childhood dreams are simply not going to happen. You bargain with your own soul as you make mature choices about what you'll do with your life going forward.
Saturn in Your Chart
Saturn often describes a fear or perceived lack within the individual. The sign Saturn occupies in your chart indicates qualities or skills you often feel you lack. Midlife Astrology: Transformation and Evolution
You've heard of the so-called "mid life crisis" - that change filled and transformative period of life that occurs at various points from the mid 30's through to the early 50's. Have you wondered what may be contributing astrologically to your desire to change jobs, have a sea change or even take a younger lover?
In astrology planets carry certain characteristics. Many stem from mythological stories in which the planet (as a God) plays a role. The combination of myth and history helps define a planet's archetypal role astrologically.
There are 4 planetary cycles* that play out through the 30's, 40's and 50's. The cycles of the outer planets -Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, along with Chiron, herald key evolutionary steps on our journey. These planets move slowly (both Pluto and Chiron have very elliptical orbits), so each planetary mid life phase can last from 18months to 2 years. The exact age each planet's mid life phase occurs differs from generation to generation.
Currently, the mid life transit of Pluto square Pluto occurs first, around the age of 35. (Presently relevant for those born between 1967 - 1969.) The second and third mid life transits, which includes Neptune square Neptune (occurring now for those born 1963 - 1965), and Uranus opposite Uranus (occurring now for those born 1963 - 1964) currently occur together in the early forties. The final phase, the Chiron return, occurs just as you cross the threshold into your fifties and is occurring now for those born 1954 -1955.
All of these mid life transits can be more fully and personally understood in light of the unique role each outer planet plays in your personal natal horoscope. For some, Uranus is a more prominent planet and the Uranus mid life phase will have the most effect, for others Pluto is prominent in their birth chart and therefore the Pluto mid life phase will have the most effect for that person. To understand your personal journey through the midlife phases a visit to your local Astrologer is recommended.
Pluto square Pluto mid 30's
Around 35 Pluto makes a square* aspect to its natal (birth) position. Pluto as a planet represents the personal journey associated with using and working with your power. Throughout this 18 month phase, issues centre on reclaiming your power.
Typical life experiences through the Pluto square Pluto include challenging interpersonal relationship issues around control - either through sexual or financial manipulation. On the positive side Pluto square Pluto can bring about the long awaited meeting with your soul mate, a child that will have a transformative effect on your life, or a step into a powerful and responsible professional role - that may take you into contact with the mass public. Pluto is about deep and highly personal evolution.
Whenever Pluto's energy rises to prominence in our lives there is a sense of death and rebirth. Mythological images to keep in mind under a Pluto phase (such as the Pluto mid life period) include the Phoenix rising from the ashes and periodic shedding of the serpent's skin. A very Australian analogy for a Plutonic experience is that of the raging bushfires that raze through the bush in the summer, burning all in their path. Within 12 months you can see the fresh green shots of new growth bursting through the blackened carnage. At times strong Plutonic periods can feel similar to this.
Pluto is also known to manifest as the need to step into our shadow side and deal with the parts of ourselves we prefer to keep hidden, even from ourselves. This period of internalisation often accompanies the "death" phase - a necessary step on the way to the rebirth. The ultimate image for Pluto is the emergence from the chrysalis as the butterfly having gone in as the caterpillar.
A key theme to keep in mind with Pluto is transformation. No matter how challenging or amazing events may be now internally this mid life phase demands change and growth at a soul level. This is necessary to allow you to evolve into the person you can be and in fact need to be to take the opportunities life presents now. The Pluto mid life phase offers a chance to work through and release issues that have been grumbling along beneath the surface without conscious awareness.
Pluto is linked to force of will and represents the ultimate expression of our magic. An inner alchemical process occurs within during the Pluto mid life phase that allows you to transform fears and inhibitions in a bid to facilitate a more full expression of your personal essence in the world. Pluto's connection with death can bring about a death of sorts to support this - a relationship or career that has long since served its purpose may be ripped away from you, or you may consciously choose to end something that is no longer serving you.
There will be cathartic endings and beginnings through the Pluto mid life phase. As with any transit, you can work consciously with what you notice and become aware of, or try to ignore what you need and have life present events that force you to make necessary changes. Other key themes for Pluto include a sense of rawness and a need to rejuvenate & replenish emotional and physical reserves.
Another area of life Pluto is associated with is sex. Often during the Pluto mid life phase you are able to deal with any unresolved issues that block your experience of sexual intimacy. Changes in sexual habits are likely as you deepen your intimate relationship with yourself. This leads to an ability to more deeply and intimately connect with a partner.
Neptune square Neptune early 40's
Neptune is a soulful and ethereal planet. Under his touch life takes on a whimsical and at times insubstantial flavour. Neptune's key theme is dissolution and surrender. Neptune is mythologically known as Poseidon, God of the Sea, and through times when Neptune rises to prominence life seems to move to an unknown tidal rhythm that can't be forced or rushed. At times under Neptune all you can do is let go and let flow - surrender into what is and stop trying to create something from nothing.
Life as you know it may seem to slip away no matter how hard you try to hold onto it. Loss of ego or self confidence can occur and depression, moodiness or the desire to escape from everyday responsibilities can manifest. A positive use of Neptune's influence is time spent alone, in reflection. A modern expression of Neptune's mid life phase is the common sea change - where people pack up their busy bustling city lives in search of more slow and experiential existence either on the coast or in the country. When Neptune's call for a more sensitive and fluid life is not heard, he can pull you down into a spiral that has you drinking and chasing romantic love (the honeymoon phase) as short term fillers for the aching hole inside. What Neptune is really asking is that you step out of the hurly-burly hectic life you lead and reconnect with what it is that fills that ache within for you. Then make it a daily or weekly ritual to spend time doing those soul honouring activities.
Neptune is linked to the revisioning of the life dream. It is time now to take stock of the visions of life that you had as a 20 or 30 yr old and notice what you have been able to achieve and what you haven't. Revisioning the dream for the journey forward involves letting go of dreams you may not be able to fulfil. Even if you have fulfilled all your youthful dreams, there may still be a sense of yearning for more meaning. It's time to dream up a life for the future that is meaningful for where you are now.
Through Neptune's mid life transit time needs to be found to reconnect with the spiritual and soulful side of life. Neptune's journey through our lives involves an eternal search for meaning. Your spiritual life needs attention now - your soul is calling out for a little more space and acknowledgement in your everyday life. Events may challenge your faith and part of the Neptune mid life phase may be to initiate a greater faith that serves you more fully as a reflection of your life experiences.
Through Neptune's mid life phase it may be hard to do a lot. Neptune's essence is more about being than achieving. Finding the time to slow life down to enjoy the beingness of your experience - to really stop along the way to smell the roses is a way through Neptune's mid life phase. Neptune is associated with creative undertakings - art, singing and writing. Finding more time to create and commune with your muses will allow you to tap into a connection with the divine. Neptune asks that logic take a back seat and impulses, intuitions and hunches be allowed to air themselves in your life. Since life is not about achieving now, taking a step sideways to trek the Himalayas or spend 6 months writing that novel you've always thought was in you is a great way of honouring the inspiration Neptune offers.
Uranus opposite Uranus early 40's
This phase of the mid life period is arguably the most important, according to fellow Astrologer Greg Clare. Uranus' orbit around the Sun takes 84yrs to complete. This length of time is so close to the average human life span that Uranus transits are often noted as "once in a lifetime" opportunities. Carl Jung likened the cycle of Uranus to the process of individuation - the process of becoming and knowing oneself as an individual and unique being. This mid way point in Uranus' cycle that occurs in the early forties then takes on greater meaning as a key marker on the evolutionary journey of the individual in this lifetime.
Uranus' key word is freedom. Liberation and the breaking of long held chains are necessary through Uranus' mid life phase. Whether you have suppressed yourself and your life for a job, relationship or belief system it is during the period of the Uranus phase of the mid life transit that it becomes apparent you can no longer hold yourself down. Honest expression of your true, unique and quirky self is the purpose of Uranus' mid life phase. It is time to embrace your true self and forget about what others think or how they may perceive you. Astrologers liken this to a conscious awakening of what have been previously unconscious parts of the psyche or persona. A sense of personal philosophy needs to be developed and embraced now.
Uranus is linked physically to the movement of hormones and neurotransmitters throughout the body. These control mood and sexual desire amongst other things. Through the Uranus mid life transit it is said that there is a biochemical change in the body's makeup that is behind the stimulus for this greater need for unique self expression. For some this manifests as the desire to have affairs or drastically change life patterns. Again there is a deeper need trying to express itself from the inner soul space during this time. Honour your needs for time, space and freedom as they arise and such drastic measures as total life changes may not be so necessary.
Through Uranus' mid life phase one finds within a growing desire to overthrow tradition and find a way through whatever events life has brought that is perfect and personalised for you. A favoured quote of mine by Ralph Waldo Emerson sums up the essence of the Uranus mid life phase; "Do not go where the path may lead: go instead where there is no path and leave a trail". Uranus is about finding your own life path - to do that one must first know the essence of themselves. Through the Uranus phase of the mid life transit your stable life may crack open, lighting bolts strike through your world, and emotional volcanoes can erupt causing irrevocable, but necessary change. Pressure that has built up explodes in a demand for freedom. These changes serve to help you know yourself.
Working with Uranus requires taking notice of where you are feeling restless, hemmed in or frustrated by life and moving towards changing these circumstances. Autonomy is a key theme through the Uranus mid life phase and relationships as well as careers will need to give you more time and space to be who you are in your own way. It is time to live life on your own terms.
Chiron return early 50's
Chiron is a planetoid (a cross between a planet and an asteroid) that was discovered in 1977. Chiron is mythologically a centaur - a half man, half horse creature who was wise in many of the healing arts. It is said that Chiron suffered a wound in a battle that plagued him all his life. Chiron's story through our lives represents an almost essential wound or pain that we have learnt to live with and around.
Around the Chiron return old fears around emotional or physical weakness are given a chance to be worked through and released. Whatever essential wound we carry is also said to represent a key offering we have to make to the human race. Our own journey with our specific pain or hurt makes us good teachers for the experience of what it means to live with such a wound.
There is a theme of sacrifice inherent in the Chiron return, occurring as it does just as one crosses the threshold into 50 the reality of one's mortality becomes apparent. There may be loss of a parent, particular lifestyle or partner. Events in life through this time can vary, however there seems to be a profound sense of healing that runs through all of them. Common themes of Chiron include wounds around mental inferiority, standing out from the crowd and physical challenges. Some of these disabilities may not change but through the passage of the Chiron return your approach to them does.
Chiron in Capricorn (People born between November 1951 - January 1955)
The essential Chiron wound of the generation with Chiron in Capricorn relates to
one's ability to take on responsibility and authority. There is often a story around the relationship to the father - with father being overtly strict or absent either physically or emotionally. People with this placement can spend much of their life trying to emulate their father (often unconsciously). Capricorn looks to the mountains of life's challenges and seeks to find a way to surmount them.
With Chiron in Capricorn one may find themselves constantly trying to live up to expectations of others and not taking enough time to consider their own motivations and desires. Chiron in Capricorn can bring a sense of failure regardless of how successful one actually is. There is a sense of never feeling as though one has achieved enough. Sometimes this placement manifests as one who places too much emphasis on material and financial success without looking to their inner world. Natives with this placement may have unrealistic expectations of how far they need to go. The pressure to keep up with the Jones's can be felt strongly by this generation.
The gifts of Chiron in Capricorn include respect for one's inner vulnerability, a natural sense of authority and dignity and the ability to foster the growth of others. It is through the period of the Chiron return that one has the opportunity to release some of the unrealistic expectations they place on themselves and set a course for life up a mountain that will result in a meaningful achievement for them. Unresolved issues around one's relationship to the father may also experience a cathartic healing or release during the Chiron return.
Chiron in Aquarius (People born between February 1955 - January 1961)
The essential Chiron wound of the generation with Chiron in Aquarius relates to the feeling of separateness that often arises with the realisations that one's belief systems and mental processes are different from others. Groups and specific social policies and parties may prove tempting but all too absorbing for those with Chiron in Aquarius. The need to construct one's own unique belief model is imperative here.
Wounds can be felt around the failure of life to live up to the utopian ideals one with Chiron in Aquarius can imagine. Those with Chiron in Aquarius have a natural affinity for working within a collective or group environment, but at the same time are reluctant to let themselves go fully into this shared experience. Rebelliousness and anarchy are common when Chiron is in Aquarius. These individuals may at times feel as though their ideas are ignored or not acknowledged. Part of the wound and sense of not belonging common within this generation stems from the fact that many of their ideas and concepts are valid and useful - but other generations can't comprehend what these visionaries with Chiron in Aquarius can see.
The gifts of Chiron in Aquarius include the ability to bridge the old and new - to slowly and progressively bring about social change and the ability to be a vehicle for controversial ideas.
*Planetary cycles refers to the relationship between the point in the Zodiac a planet occupied at your birth, and the points on its continued orbit around the Sun at which it makes a mathematical angle to that initial birth placement throughout your life. A return is the planetary return to the same part of the Zodiac a planet occupied at your birth - a full cycle around the heavens if you like. A square is the forming of a 90degree angle from where the planet is now in the heavens in relationship to where it was when you were born. An opposition is the forming of a 180 degree angle between where the planet is now in the sky and where it was when you were born. December 1 - February 28
Gemini
You're unusually practical until mid February, though your responsibilities and routines may need revision from December 25 - January 14. Instead of pushing forward, revisit your favourite rituals and workout routines. Question your understanding of intimacy as this season you're ready to explore some of your most pressing questions. Close relationships enter a stop/start period where the past needs to be revisited before you can move forward. Shared finances are also in question so take your time doing all the necessary preparation before you sign or make major couple/investment commitments.
December 1 - February 28
Aries
Hit the training brakes mid December - your patron planet Mars changes direction then encouraging you to follow suit. Motivation and energy is high, but you may need to trial a variety of workouts to find something that holds your interest. Venus helps you update your style towards the end of January so plan luxury pampering time then. You'll be keen to try new treatments and looks, but take care you don't experiment with anything permanent. You'll benefit from training in groups or with a workout buddy through mid February. Chatting while you exercise helps you stay motivated then.
