Mercury Retrograde
Mercury appears to move backwards at 3 different periods throughout 2011. In 2011 the emphasis from Mercury’s retrogrades is on the FIRE signs/element. This makes Mercury retrograde especially influential for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius this year.
Mercury Retrograde is traditionally a time to hold off signing important documents or contracts. Instead take time to review or rethink major decisions. It’s a time for reflection and research.
Under Mercury retrograde new directions relating to all areas of your life including friends, relationships, career, money and family capture your interest, but it's best to avoid making or finalising choices until Mercury turns direct (forward) again.
Each Mercury Retrograde lasts about three weeks. Through this time you can expect a higher than usual amount of organisational hiccups, like having to reschedule plans at the last minute, rearrange your diary/life and deal with misunderstandings or crossed wires due to a communication breakdowns.
Transport and communication are two areas which typically suffer during Mercury Retrogrades. Double check computer back ups, make copies of anything important you’re working on and be prepared for technical and communication hiccups like mobile dropouts or delays with travel. That said, it is a good time to be on holidays – just make sure everything is organised before Mercury goes retrograde.
You’ll be most affected by Mercury retrograde effect if it falls in your sign. As they are ruled by Mercury, Gemini and Virgo are always challenged through these periods. If your career point or MC is ruled by either Gemini or Virgo, you may also find these periods particularly delay prone regarding work and professional matters.
Shadow Periods
Right before and immediately after a planet goes retrograde it moves through the part of the Zodiac/sky that it will be or has just been reversing through. This is the shadow area. Ie If Mercury will be retrograde from 25 Aries back to 10 Aries, the period where it covers the space from 10 Aries to 25 Aries while moving forwards is it’s shadow. This happens in the lead up the retrograde and right after. The shadow period occurs right before and just after the retrograde itself. Because Mercury (or any other planet), is covering “tainted” ground at this time it’s said to be still a little off and not at it’s strongest.
2011 Mercury retrogrades:
March 29 - April 22, from 24 - 12 Aries
August 2 - 26, from 1 Virgo - 18 Leo
November 23 - December 14, from 20 - 3 Sagittarius

Prince William, 28, is having his Saturn return. This is known as the astrological coming of age cycle, and happens for everyone between 28 – 30. It’s typically a time of growing up, taking on more responsibility and making or breaking major commitments, especially around love and career. Prince William seems to be taking it all in his stride by finally proposing to his long time girlfriend, Kate Middleton, though for some clients, it can be a time of turmoil and major decision making. What’s certain is that the choices you make at your Saturn return have long term influences on the future course of your life. For many, this period reflects the adopting of a more grown up mindset, one that leaves much of the foot lose, fancy free energy of the twenties in the past.
Part of the work of an astrologer is in helping clients pick ideal dates for different endeavours, which includes wedding dates. April 29, 2011, the royal wedding date, is not a date I’d have chosen for a client, with a low Moon light day and a tricky Venus/Saturn link. There may be some challenges ahead for the royal couple, including early separations in their marriage. Links from the wedding chart to Prince William’s Neptune show that there’ll be dreamy and fairytale like intentions around this day, but whether reality can support this in the long term is yet to be determined!
Updated April 29, 2011
The Royal Wedding Chart
Every event has a key moment at which it begins; astrologers believe that the astrological influences at a beginning moment influence what happens to the thing that begins then.
This includes such celebrations as weddings, of which there is a fairly significant one happening in less than 24 hours.
When I first looked at the Royal Wedding, there was only speculation as to when it would be; now we have an official time and date (off their wedding website no less!)

When looking at the chart for an event, astrologers do a couple of things. We look at the chart itself, and consider it’s influences. We also look at the connections between the event chart and the charts of those involved. I've just done the first for brevity, but you can read what I have to say about the royal relationship here.
What’s great about this chart – especially for something you want to last, like a marriage, is that the ascendant/descendant line, which has a lot to do with relationships, is in fixed signs – good for stability and endurance.
The Sun, ruler of the Leo Ascendant, is high in the sky/chart, and favourably placed in the 10th house. Something is beginning at this time which is public. Saturn, traditional ruler of the Aquarius descendant, is strongly placed in Libra.
What’s tricky about this chart, especially for a wedding, is the applying opposition aspect between Venus (ruler of the 4th House of Home and Family) and Saturn (ruler of the 7th House of Relationships). Opposition aspects show tension and challenge; in a marriage, one would preferably avoid tension between family and domestic plans with the relationship needs themselves. At least this aspect falls in the 3rd and 9th Houses, which lessens some of troublesome qualities.
Mars, as ruler of the MC, is strongly placed in Aries, close the MC from the 9th house side. This indicates travel and overseas connections as key to this marriage. Mars is applying to Jupiter, so there’ll be a big focus on the public side of this marriage (no, really – but with Jupiter we get super big), but there’ll also be lots of the 9th house activities too. They will public like never before.
However, the Moon Phase at the time of the wedding is Balsamic, and the Moon is invisible due to its proximity to the Sun. To have so many 9th/10th house influences – which have in the spotlight written all over them, with a Balsamic Moon shows some kind of contrast between wanting to live privately but in the public eye.
This wedding – the beginning of a marriage – is happening under a Moon Phase all about endings. Which may give some credence to the long thought astrological tenant that the British Monarchy ends with William. This is tied to the saros series of eclipses under which both the British Monarchy and William were born, which runs from 792 AD to 2036. You can read more about this in Bernadette Brady’s fabulous predictive astrology book ‘The Eagle and the Lark’.
Plenty of food for thought!
Modern Intention Setting Using Old World Wisdom: New Moon Wishing
Every New Moon represents a new beginning; an opportunity to start a fresh in a new area of life. As the Sun and Moon align, seeds are planted and new potentials begin to take form.
One of the most potent ways to connect with the power of a New Moon is through creative intention setting, through a process known as New Moon Wishing. Jan Spiller coined this phrase in her book ‘New Moon Astrology’ (2001 Bantam). She suggests making your wishes within 8 hours of the New Moon.
My New Moon Wishing ritual begins with lighting incense and a candle, and taking a moment to reflect on where I am in life today. Then, I imagine where I’d love to be. Usually, I focus my dreams on areas of life linked to both the sign energy of the New Moon (for a sign by sign guide click here) and the house area of my birth chart the current New Moon is energising. (Don’t know your personal chart? Calculate it free at www.astro.com) (If you’re new to astrology and keen to learn about basics like houses and signs, you might like my Level 1 Contemporary Astrology course, available online through the Awareness Institute.)
I then pull out my special New Moon Wishing book. I’ve been recording my New Moon wishes, as sporadically as I’ve done them, since 2002. This particular New
Moon wishing book begins under the New Moon in Cancer in July 2002. I haven’t written every New Moon wish I’ve made since then in this book but I have recorded the vast majority of them.
In this book, I write down my wishes around the month’s current themes. I ensure I word them carefully, as Jan suggests, wishing for things to happen easily, and focus my wishes on things based around myself (yes, New Moon Wishes are a perfect time to be healthily selfish!) – knowing that unless it’s in another person’s highest good, it’s impossible to ask for something on behalf of another. Using therapeutic ‘I’ statements – usually something like ‘I’d like to easily find myself……’ I craft out the changes I’d like in both the relevant sign and houses areas.
Sometimes I write out the full allocation of wishes Jan suggests (10) – and other months, like this one, there are just three or four key wishes around current areas of focus. After writing these out, I then say them out loud, to firmly imprint the ideas in my being. I seem to recall once reading something about how speaking what one has written helps the concept travel across both sides of the brain, thus imprinting it more deeply on one’s psyche. Either way, it’s an excellent editing technique and helps me ensure I’ve worded things just so – and haven’t forgotten anything currently important. Then, I take a moment to envisage my life with these things happening, gone or going on, whatever the wish may be.
How about you? Have you taken the time to try the power of creative wishing in your world?

Aries Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Wise old Saturn continues his trek through your partnership zone, challenging you to commit to those you love or re-evaluate long term relationship plans. Saturn’s steady influence in your partnership sector shows 2011 as a year where, overall, relationships feel more like work than fun. That said, Venus brings affection and warmth into your closest one on one relationships from September 16 – October 10. The alignment between Venus and Saturn in your love zone on September 13 represents a significant turning point regarding relationships and commitment. Mature choices in relationships are likely to be the right ones this year.
Saturn’s basic influence is practical and grounded, helping you see the dynamic between yourself and significant others for what it is, not what you want it to be. With your eyes, and heart, wide open, you are better able to make authentic commitments within your closest partnerships. Be practical about ending relationships that don’t have long term potential. Saturn gifts you with maturity to make firm and final relationship choices.
March 28 – 31 is a key time for finding new balance between yourself and others, as Jupiter and Saturn combine to help influence your outlook on relationships, commitment and equality.
Commitments are tested and keeping your promises to others means digging deep as Mars and Saturn link April 18.
Your word should be your bond on October 17, as a Mercury/Saturn link then highlights how important reliability is in strengthening relationships.
Taurus Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
It’s the relationship you have with yourself that’s your top priority in 2011. As things get moving in your love life, don’t forget to stay in touch with your own needs. Mars in your sign from May 12 – June 22 gives you confidence to assert yourself and take action about getting your own needs met. You could be more independent or ‘me first’ than usual then, which will help put close partnerships into perspective.
Love Goddess Venus in your relationship zone from October 10 – November 3 brings out your sultry, seductive side. Venus is all about attraction and if you’re single then, a little effort goes a long way to meeting new people. Got a long term love? Venus’ influence helps bring passion, affection and fun back into your romance. Set heavy, practical couple goals to the side and make time to simply enjoy each other.
Mercury triggers your relationship sector from October 14 – November 3 making it easier to communicate within your closest partnerships. Taking time to talk about the little things, the private things and those sensitive subjects helps deepen your bond and create trust. Be as open with significant others as you expect them to be with you.
Gemini Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Love Goddess Venus makes two trips through your relationship zone in 2011. Under her influence you are primed for romance from January 8 – February 5 and November 3 – 27. Close relationships become more affectionate then, as you realise more deeply the value of partnership. Business and personal relationships improve as you take a ‘softly, sweetly’ approach to dealing with others. If you’re single, these periods are ideal for making extra effort with meeting new people and expressing your feelings honestly. If you’re in a relationship, make these periods times where you put your relationship first, in words and actions. Plan a couple’s only getaway and focus on having fun together. Venus prefers pleasure rather than practicality so as much as possible, set worries about future security to the side under her influence. Art and music are all avenues through which your love life improves through these periods.
Your personal love planet, Jupiter, highlights social connections and shared spirituality this year. Until June 5, making the effort to blend relationships and friendships pays off. Organise group get togethers where your significant other and your friends can get to know each other better. Or, if single, take your friend’s advice re relationships and dating. After June 5 developing shared beliefs as a couple helps improve relationships. As you prioritise your own spiritual practice in ways that work for you, you’ll open your being to meeting or connecting deeply with those in your inner circle.
Cancer Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Mercury helps make it easier for you to communicate with those you love when he visits your partnership zone from January 14 – February 4. You’re flirty and witty then as curiosity helps you overcome shyness when meeting new people or expressing yourself honestly in close partnerships. Heartfelt discussions help improve the quality of all your relationships now – business or personal.
Your love life is doubly blessed in 2011 as love Goddess Venus triggers your relationship sector twice, from February 5 – March 5 and November 27 – December 21. Regardless of your relationship status, you’ll have abundant opportunities to increase the amount of love and affection in your world through these periods in 2011. If you’re single and looking, these periods show when you’re at your attractive best and will potentially have better success with meeting new people and dating. If attached, make these periods times in which you make a conscious effort to put your relationship first. Venus is about pleasure and enjoyment. Under her touch, relationships grow as you focus on sharing the good things in life with those you love.
Power planet Pluto continues his extended visit through your partnership zone, helping you discover the inner strength needed to make profound changes in your most intimate partnerships. Key dates where truth, honesty and passion become the catalysts for change in relationships include January 18, February 10, February 22 – March 2, August 11/12 and December 2 & 31.
Leo Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Passion planet Mars in your partnership zone January 16 – February 24 gives you confidence to go after what you want in love and relationships. Personal and professional one on one partnerships are reinvigorated as you take charge. Intimacy grows as sexual energy is aroused. Singles have extra courage to try new things in the dating game; couples are prepared to put energy into enhancing their connection. It’s a time for doing rather than waiting where love, relationships and passion are concerned.
Romantic Venus adds affection and love into your relationships from March 3 – 28. Sweetness is the way to win hearts now so don’t be shy about treating those you love. Trusting your intuition pays off in relationships on February 18 & 21 and March 27.
A new era in love and relationships starts as Neptune begins to move out of your relationship sector. The period from April 5 - August 5 helps reveal the shape of things to come, as you realise your needs in close partnerships are changing. Shifts in relationships are mostly subtle this year, as you find new ways to understand those around you.
Virgo Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Sexy Mars puts a fire in your belly about moving forward in close relationships from February 24 – April 3, when you’ve got added confidence to consciously assert yourself with significant others. Being direct makes it clear to those you share intimate space with what it is you really want. Personal and professional partnerships get a shake up, as instead of letting things that frustrate you slide, you take the initiative to address issues. Action and adventure are the way to bring the spark back into your love life now. If you’re single, get active to meet new people. Attached? Start exercising together to fire up those passionate endorphins.
A new era in love and relationships begins on April 5 as soulful Neptune makes his first pass into your partnership sector. From April 5 – August 5 you’re exploring a more compassionate, giving and selfless side to love. You may surprise yourself and those around you with your desire to put relationship needs before work and other priorities. Neptune arouses the fairytale archetype and you’ll have to work to keep your feet, and your heart, grounded. While getting swept off your feet by a significant other is entirely possible now, ideally you’ll get involved with someone who’s got genuine long term intentions. While the initial rush of infatuation can be irresistible, under Neptune’s touch you’re wise to take it slow when it comes to making major love choices. Sometimes beneath Neptune’s perfect seeming glamour, things that seem too good to be true are. Be selective about when, where and with whom you wear the proverbial rose coloured glasses.
Libra Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
This area is one of your most active in 2011 as both Uranus and Jupiter trigger this space.
Innovative Uranus settles into your partnership zone on March 13 for a seven year stay. Many Libras will go through rollercoaster ride like experiences of change in relationships under this influence. Uranus brings opportunities for liberation so if you’re simply treading water in a relationship long past its use by date, Uranus will provide the situations or desire for freedom to help you cut ties. If you’re in an established relationship, Uranus helps you shake up entrenched routines and bring back the excitement. If you make it all about trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone, Uranus will provide the electricity to help jump start your relationship. Single? Uranus provides many opportunities for short term, enlivening experiences.
Typically Uranus/relationship sector combinations manifest in on / off or hot / cold love energy. Rather than hoping for a partner to come home to every night, enjoy the spontaneous chances you get to be with those you love and then when you’ve got time apart, make the most of it.
Expansive Jupiter helps open doors in love as he transits your relationship sector from January 22 – June 5. This once-in-12-years energy brings opportunities to experience more of the full spectrum of possibilities relationships have to offer. Doing so naturally asks that you devote more time and energy to those significant others in your world – or if single, to the journey around meeting potential partners. With Jupiter in your seventh house of relationships you get more attention from others, in that fun, flattering, flirty kind of way. Business partnerships also grow under this influence, as Jupiter doesn’t discriminate between intimate or professional relationships. Working on projects in pairs, or developing client relationships, can be more successful now.
Key aspects from Jupiter bring powerful energies into your relationships through the first few months of 2011.
Jupiter links to Pluto February 22 – March 2 and transformation that completely reworks your home and relationship lives becomes possible. Growth in relationships can conflict with family or domestic plans. Honouring your true beliefs about partnerships is the way through any power struggles or controlling situations that arise with significant others now. On the flip side, new experiences in relationships may give you the courage to make those necessary changes to your living situation or within family dynamics.
Jupiter links to Saturn from March 28 – 31 and events around these dates act as the catalyst for helping you clarify true needs and commitments in relationships. The see saw between commitment and adventure swings so try to keep your approach to relationships balanced. Hopes and dreams for romance must be tempered with reality and practical limitations. Keep your feet on the ground and all things are possible. If you’ve gone too far out on a limb for love, this transit brings you back to real life.
Scorpio Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Lucky Jupiter enters your partnership place on June 5 for a 12 month stay. Even though this brings different opportunities based on your relationship status, all Scorpios will be feeling the love in 2011. You get extra positive attention from other people and find it easier to create meaningful partnerships.
Jupiter boosts confidence giving you faith to trust in and take romantic risks. If single, this helps you take ‘putting yourself out there’ to new levels, making it easier to expand the search for a mate. Many single Scorpios will find new perspective about their relationship status, even seeing the positives in being solo at this time.
Scorpios in relationships experience Jupiter’s touch as a desire for more – more quality time, more affection, more passion. Yes, that means you are likely to be insatiable at varying points in the second half of 2011. Make the most of this by planning extra couple’s only get always and an abundance of date nights. All Scorpios find that travel, study / teaching and philosophy become bigger parts of partnership this year.
Special dates for relationships include:
May 3 – New Moon in your relationship zone. It’s a case of ‘out with the old, in with the new’ where partnerships are concerned. Great for enhancing existing relationships and creating new ones.
July 2 – 14 and October 24 – 31 – Jupiter trine Pluto. Relationship experiences now help you grow and transform in healthy, conscious ways. Hold your power openly with others and make partnership choices based on your deepest beliefs. Hope around and in relationships transforms, helping you see the glass half full in love and romance.
Sagittarius Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Cheeky Mercury brings a light-hearted love vibe from June 3 – 17. Your preference is for a talkative, curious partner, and through this period you may well feel like you’ve met your perfect match! Talks, events, movies and books all create great discussion in your closest partnerships now. The little details you normally don’t bother sharing help bring you closer to the people that matter.

Sharing passions outside the bedroom is a great way to boost the heat at home. If you’re single through this time, Mars gives you confidence to take romantic risks.
Capricorn Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Relationships continue to act as the mirror through which you see yourself transform. With intense Pluto slowly making his way through your sign, you are being forced to look your fears around intimacy in the face and overcome them. Doing so brings into sharp view the closest relationships in your life. As you examine why you are the way you are you’ll naturally wonder how much an impact those around you have on shaping your personality. August 11 / 12, when Mars and Pluto face off across your love axis, is a potent time for re-establishing a healthy balance of power in close partnerships. Romantic dramas could peak then so be prepared to purge and purify where matters of the heart are concerned.
Passionate Mars triggers your partnership sector from August 4 – September 20. Mars brings confidence and energy to help you drive forward in relationships. Single or attached, you’ll be keen to take the initiative with significant others through this period. You’ll naturally fall into the role of leader so don’t be shy about setting the relationship agenda.
Love Goddess Venus triggers your relationship zone from July 5 – 29 and this could be one of your most romantic periods all year. You’re naturally in tune with others and being prepared to compromise helps you find common ground. Make time for romance and you’ll reap the rewards now.
Aquarius Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Relationships power forward under the influence of assertive Mars from September 20 – November 12 but under Mercury’s retrograde (backwards) influence from August 9 – 25 romantic delays are likely.
Communication becomes the main focus of romantic relationships from July 3 – September 10 under the extra long transit of Mercury through your partnership sector. Listening to loved ones helps immediately improve the quality of your closest partnerships, and makes it easier for others to hear what you have to say. Be open to exploring new or improved ways of communicating as Mercury retrogrades through your relationship sector in August. Misunderstandings due to crossed wires are more likely in love (and in professional partnerships) then, so be patient and prepared to repeat yourself to make sure your message gets across. If single, younger or witty partners hold most appeal.
Passionate Mars brings fire, energy and progress into relationships from September 20 – November 12. You’ll want to take charge to make what you want happen in relationships then, just try to be understanding that not everyone wants to move at your pace. Action and adventure help enhance the quality of your closest partnerships now. In a couple? Plan to get outside and work up a sweat with a physical challenge together. Single? Be bold about putting your desires out there. Take the initiative to let those you’re attracted to know your true feelings. All Aquarians get an extra dose of courage helping you be more honest and outspoken about what you really want in relationships through this time.
Pisces Love Stars for 2011 (from the WellBeing Astrology Guide)
Relationships aren’t the main focus of your solar chart in 2011, though you’ll still have regular visits from cheeky Mercury and affectionate Venus in which to spice up your love life.
You’re at your most flirtatious from September 10 – 26 under the influence of witty Mercury. Your instinct and intuition helps you get noticed now and singles will enjoy the process of connecting with new people. Attached? Open conversations help improve your connection. Talking through the details and little things of your life helps you get closer to your partner. Major couple decisions are easily finalised now as you take the time to find out all the facts about current issues.
Venus brings romance into your life from August 22 – September 16. Through this time you’ll also reap the rewards of making significant others your priority. Take time away from work and family to reconnect with your partner, or if single, make an effort to glam up and meet new people. Your powers of persuasion are hard to resist.
Mars ends the year having settled into your relationship sector for what will ultimately be an eight month visit. From November 12 through to mid 2012 your passions about partnership are in the spotlight and under review. Use the period at the end of this year to spice up your love life in ways that feel comfortable. Mars shows you how to take the lead in close partnerships, helping you speak candidly with significant others about your true desires. You’ll have plenty of time to revise and review relationship dreams in the early part of 2012.
